Elmer, NJ 08318
After several months of hard work, the Greater Elmer Area Historical is happy to announce an Open House at their new headquarters, the former St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Elmer, on Saturday, April 21st from 10am-2pm.
Now housing the museum and archives of the historical society, the building was donated to the society by the Catholic Community of the Holy Spirit last fall. Built in 1894, the church closed in 2010 after merging with the parishes of Woodstown and Mullica Hill. The building is now used by the historical society to display their collection of artifacts from Elmer, Pittsgrove, and Upper Pittsgrove, that they have been collecting during the past eight years.
Many members of the Greater Elmer Area Historical Society and the community have volunteered time, labor, and supplies during the past several months as they made necessary renovations, set up display cases, inventoried the archives, and prepared the building to be open to the public. The historical society is very grateful to all those who have contributed!
On display on April 21st will be exhibits on the early history of Elmer, Pittsgrove, and Upper Pittsgrove, objects from the industries that once thrived here, antique tools, family heirlooms, and Lenni Lenape artifacts. Artwork of local historic scenes painted by Everett Kenyon will also be on display, with prints for sale. Past issues of the historical society’s annual free historical booklet will be available, along with other books for browsing. The church also features stained glass windows with the names of the original families of the church who contributed towards them.
To make room for the display cases and the library area, the historical society is offering a handful of pews for sale, to help fund the renovations. 10 foot and 7 foot pews are available; please call 609-501-4632 if interested. The historical society also welcomes new members and volunteers; please call 609-670-0407 for more information.
The Greater Elmer Area Historical Society regularly holds meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30pm, which are open to the public. The meetings usually include a business meeting followed by show and tell, with occasionally a guest speaker.
Please come on out on Saturday, April 21st between 10am-2pm to visit the Greater Elmer Area Historical Society’s new building! The former church is located at 117 Broad Street, Elmer, NJ. For more information, visit email email@example.com, or call 609-670-0407. We look forward to your visit!
