First Day Hike at Parvin While Exploring It’s History @ Parvin State Park
Jan 1 @ 1:00 pm

The Parvin State Park Appreciation Committee, Inc. announces the return of “First Walk Hike” at Parvin State Park on Tuesday, January 1 beginning promptly at 1pm!

Join us at Fisheman’s Landing, 915 Parvin Mill Road, for a two hour walk along a two mile length of Thundergust Lake trail and return while imagining how things were 90 years ago.

Come out and enjoy an easy, pet friendly walk with family and friends, wear sturdy footwear and weather appropriate clothing along with water, snacks, cameras and binoculars.  Be prepared though, there are no restrooms available at the Park during this walk.

What a great way to enjoy a real “gem” of Pittsgrove Township, experience some great scenery and gain an insight into the history that has continually made Parvin State Park an important piece of the local heritage!

It is requested that reservations be made in advance by emailing parvinvolunteers@gmail.com so appropriate arrangements for tours can be made.

For more information, please follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or parvinvolunteers@gmail.com.  If this event needs to be cancelled due to weather, it will be announced on the above sites as well!

The Hancock House Massacre 241st Anniversary @ The Hancock House State Historic Site
Mar 23 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Date & Time: Saturday, March 23rd & Sunday, March 24th, 2019, 10am – 4 pm, Rain or Shine

Location: The Hancock House State Historic Site – 3 Front Street – Hancocks Bridge, NJ – 08038

In March of 1778, Salem County was invaded by a British foraging expedition sent from Philadelphia while local militia organized to defend their homes. At Quinton’s Bridge, March 18th, the militia was barely able to fend off the British advance over the Alloway Creek, and just three days later Captain Sheppard’s Company, guarding the passage over Hancock’s Bridge, was surprised by the Queen’s Rangers and “massacred”. After this, resistance faded, leaving the county open to plunder. The British eventually left and Salem was at peace once again, but residents would forever remember the trials and tribulations of those days in March of 1778.

Join us at the Hancock House State Historic Site where the militia will form to repel the British once again!

Activities will include:

  • Military encampments
  • Musket and drill demonstrations
  • Tours of the house where the attack happened
  • Meet Judge Hancock and others that were there Guided tour of Quinton’s Bridge battle site (3:30pm each day)
